History
The original Papa Joe's holds a unique place in the history of Islamorada. Located on the south end of Upper Matecumbe, the initial construction of the iconic two story building that housed Papa Joe's was built in the aftermath of the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane that destroyed much of the island. The reconstruction of the island led to the establishment of the 10 cabin fishing resort built by the fishing enthusiasts Suze and Everett Fowler. The Fowler resort was built in 1937 in order to promote the tourism economy that was just beginning to thrive in the 30's on Islamorada. Papa Joe's became a popular fixture on the island in the late 70's after Joe Miller purchased the Fowler fishing camp and was renamed the Caribee Yacht Basin to Papa Joe's.
