The John B. Gorrie Elementary School, the oldest operating elementary school in Florida, was built in 1889. Originally knowns as the Hyde Park Grammar School, the building was built at the corner of Platt Street and West Seventh (Magnolia) Avenue. In 1915, the name was changed to "Dr. John B. Gorrie Elementary School" to honor Gorrie's achievements in medical science, most notably the invention of the ice-making machine, a forerunner of the air conditioner. In recent years Gorrie Elementary has won the Golden School Award, the Five Star School Award for community involvement, and the Florida School Recognition Award for sustained academic performance. Marjorie Sandler is the principal of Gorrie Elementary; Assistant Principal is Jody Adams.
