The Brandon Recreation Center offers programming primarily for children, from preschool through high school. A social preschool is offered in the morning. The after-school program is for school-age children starting in kindergarten. Homework time is scheduled as well as organized games, special events and athletic and arts and crafts activities, among other offerings. The center also features an e-library with four computers available at any one time.
The athletic program includes flag football, cheerleading, soccer, basketball, T-ball, track and field and cross country. The center also is the home of the Brandon Leagurettes Girls Slow-Pitch Softball League, which celebrates its 4oth anniversary on Jan. 15, 2010.
The center is part of the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department and is open to all citizens living in Hillsborough County. Most participants come from the Greater Brandon/Valrico area but a good number of people also come from Riverview, Mango, Tampa and Plant City.
The center's director, Marty Bradley, has been with the center for 25 years. The Brandon Recreation Center is adjacent to the Brandon Community Center. Together they sit on a 21-acre site. Programs and offerings are shared between the two facilities.
The center's outdoor facilities include four tennis courts, four multipurpose courts, three softball fields, an open play area, playground and two sand volleyball courts. A separate fitness room is on the site as well.
