Established in 1961, The Southwest Florida Water Management District aims at protecting and preserving water resources throughout Florida. It operates and maintains several large flood protection projects, as well as protects water quality and natural systems, such as rivers, lakes, wetland and associated upland. It maintains more than 90 local governments that are spread across an area of over 10,000 square miles with total population of nearly 4 million.
