The U.S. Department of State is the federal agency responsible for U.S. foreign affairs. The Department of State helps to shape a free, secure and more prosperous world through formulating, representing and implementing the President's foreign policy through its numerous bureaus and offices. The Department also supports the foreign affairs activities of other U.S. Government entities including the Department of Commerce and the Agency for International Development. It also provides a range of important services to U.S. citizens and foreigners seeking to visit or immigrate to the U.S. All foreign affairs activities including U.S. representation abroad, foreign assistance programs, countering international crime and foreign military training programs are paid for by the foreign affairs budget. The Department of State conducts all of these activities with a small workforce comprised of civil service and foreign service employees. The State Department was created along with the U.S. Constitution at the inception of the country.
