MERC (Maasai Environmental Resource) is a collective of Maasai community organizers and collaborators dedicated to protecting wildlife, promoting Maasai land rights, and preserving Maasai culture. Founded in 1987 by Meitamei Olol Dapash, MERC works towards the self-determination of Olosho le Maa and the stewardship of Maasailand, focusing on land justice and stewardship, ecology and coexistence, decolonizing knowledge, leadership, resilient futures, and Maasai-led tourism.
MERC actively engages in reclaiming stolen lands, participating in conservation efforts, supporting Maasai scholarship, advocating for cultural leadership, and collaborating with organizations and researchers. They also offer study programs, encourage equal partnerships, and welcome visitors to explore Maasailand and collaborate on research. MERC stands in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter Movement and supports the Maasai community in Loliondo, while also working towards the recovery and regeneration of the Mau Forest, a critical watershed in Maasailand.
