The Building and Construction Trades Department is an independent affiliated organization of the AFL-CIO representing as many as 11 international unions. The BCTD coordinates activity and provides resources to more than 10 affiliated trades unions in the construction trade. It has as many as 386 state, local and provincial councils in the United States and Canada. Established in 1908, the department helps its building trades unions to make job sites, deliver apprenticeship and journey-level training, organize new workers, support legislation and assist in securing wages through collective bargaining. In addition, the BCTD works to resolve jurisdictional disputes within the construction trades and helps in the formation of local building trades councils. The department is based in Washington, D.C.
