Building Official Vernon Vesey says that his department is "really here to help the residents" of Montville. If you want to change your living environment significantly, the building department should be your first stop. Vesey and Assistant Building Official David Jensen can review your plans, make sure you have the right permits, or schedule an inspection, all to make sure that you're working "in the code-compliant manner," Vesey says. According to the town's website, the building department also is responsible for "issuing necessary orders and notices to remove illegal or unsafe conditions" and "requiring the necessary safeguards during construction and demolition of structures." "Nobody likes being told what to do with their house," Vesey says, but it's his department's job to make sure that structures and the residents in them are safe. "We're not the enemy," Vesey says.
