With more than 25,000 locations in 80 countries, SUBWAY is the second-largest fast food franchise in the world. The restaurants are famous for offering submarine sandwiches, salads and wraps, giving the customer the option to create nearly limitless combinations of meats, cheeses, vegetables and breads. The SUBWAY brand was founded in the summer of 1965 in Bridgeport, Conn. With a $1,000 loan from a family friend, 17-year-old Fred DeLuca opened Pete s Super Submarines in order to earn money for his college tuition. The company now employs more than 700 people at its Milford, Conn., headquarters alone. The SUBWAY brand is owned by Doctor s Associates, a privately held company. Approximately 4,300 of the company s locations are nontraditional units located in convenience stores, truck stops, universities, hospitals, military bases, arenas and shopping malls.
