In 1955, St Vincent's Special Needs Service was established in Bridgeport as a therapy treatment program for children with cerebral palsy. It has since evolved into a major provider of specialized lifelong education and therapeutic programs for children and adults with multiple developmental disabilities and special health care needs in southern Connecticut. The organization has been a subsidiary of the St. Vincent's Health Services system since 1987. Its programs are inclusive, offering individuals with special needs and those without special needs opportunities to participate in activities, learning from each other. In all its programs, St. Vincent s is committed to assist those with special needs to live fully and independently. Its staff includes early childhood and special education teachers and assistants, physical and occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, adult day program specialists and assistants, job coaches, residential direct care counselors, community recreation and family support facilitators, and other specialists in the education, health and human services fields. The center is located in Trumbull, Conn.
