After a tragic explosion at Ensign-Bickford in 1905, northern Italians from Ellis Island were brought in to do dangerous work the company could not get anyone else to do. Officially founded in March of 1917 by 50 men, the Prince Thomas of Savoy Society originally started as an aid society, helping its isolated community. Since then it has evolved into a social club which aids the entire Avon community. The building is used by numerous other organizations; members are a vital part of the community.
