The North Branford Probate Court handles civic and family issues including the administration and interpretation of wills, estates and trusts, the removal of guardianship and parental rights from unfit parents, the conservation of the persons and estates of the mentally incapable, the appointment of guardians, the approval of adoptions and the administration of name changes. The staff of the court's office is permitted to answer procedural questions but not to give specific legal advice; the office recommends parties obtain professional counsel for the complex and sensitive matters handled by probate. Judges of probate are elected to four year terms.
