Anne and Louis Barth first opened the doors of Harvest Bakery on Memorial Day in 1941. bakery was located at 562 North Main Street in Bristol, but relocated to its present Farmington Avenue address in 1948.In 1949, the Barth's daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Payson Hurwitz, joined the bakery business. In 1979, current owner Martin Hurwitz and his wife Jackie joined the bakery, becoming the third generation to enter the family business.Baking often begins at 1 AM or 1: 30 AM, with holidays being particularly busy. Approximately 1, 000 loaves of bread are sold at Christmas, and 600 at Easter.Harvest Bakery is one of few bakeries in Connecticut carrying on the tradition of hearth-baking our bread and rolls, and we are still using the bread and hard roll recipes that Grandpa Barth originated! Hearth baking means every loaf of bread or delicious hard roll is individually placed on a wooden peel and shuffled onto the oven hearth to bake. This method of baking insures a unique quality product.
