Hamden Police Department
For decades the Hamden Police Department has occupied two buildings next to the Memorial Town Hall on Dixwell Avenue. But soon Memorial Town Hall will become the police department as renovations are underway to transform it to a modern police facility. It is a homecoming of sorts because at one time the Police Department was located in the basement of the building. After Town Hall offices moved to the new Government Center at the intersection of Evergreen and Dixwell avenues, talk turned to what would happen to the old Town Hall, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. After much discussion the Legislative Council in 2009 voted to renovate it into a much-needed Police Headquarters. Those renovations include the addition of a parking garage, alleviating a long-standing parking problem on the site. The department has about 107 sworn officers, 24 civilian staff and 22 crossing guards.
