The town of Ellington is protected by the state of Connecticut resident troopers. The main function is to protect life and property in the town. This is achieved with four resident state troopers, 11 police constables, two Marine constables, and troopers from Troop C in Tolland. The Ellington office is supported by the entire state police department and can use any of the specialized departments, including the major crime squad, detective division, forensic laboratory, fire marshal's division, emergency services unit, narcotics unit, canine corps, bomb squad, and traffic and truck squads. From Monday through Friday, applications for state pistol permits, requests for a record check, requests for a copy of a state police investigation, maps, and motor vehicle forms can be obtained in this office. Appointments can also be made to have fingerprinting done.
