South Church offers religious education programs for youths and adults. It runs a joint confirmation process with First Church, United Church of Christ in Middletown. In addition to a confirmation "initiates" program, the two churches cooperate in a "pre-initiates" program for younger children. It also has a senior high youth group. South Church traces its origins to Ebenezer Frothingham, a staunch separatist of the Great Awakening who defied the established church of the Connecticut Colony. In 1747, Frothingham and his congregants moved to Middletown where they worshipped in his home, then at a meetinghouse on Mill Street. South Church moved to its current site at Main and Pleasant streets in 1830.
