According to this organization's pamphlet, it's "not what we give, but what we share." Designed to help Naugatuck and Beacon Falls residents in need, the food bank provides temporary aid--and is not intended for long-term assistance. Area churches from all denominations are responsible for its operation and no paid staff is employed. Anyone interested in utilizing the food bank can be referred by a clergy person or a local social service agency. In 2009 alone, the food bank served 6,655 people offering nearly 60,000 meals to 420 families. Residents interested in volunteering can contact their local clergy. Those interested in donating can leave donations at one of the sponsor churches, contribute to community food drives or drop off during food bank hours. Nonperishable foods are needed, such as peanut butter, jelly, juice, canned vegetables and fruits, and pasta and sauce.
