The Connecticut Air National Guard serves the Air Force s Air Combat Command from Bradley Air National Guard Base at Bradley Airport. Its two units, officially named the 103rd Fighter Wing and 103rd Air Control Squadron, are commonly known as the Flying Yankees and Yankee Watch. The Flying Yankees provide close air support with the awesome firepower of the A-10 aircraft. Yankee Watch s mission includes real-time detection, identification and surveillance of air traffic for combat operations and homeland defense. The Air National Guard has been a part of United States history since the Revolutionary War. Today s Air National Guard is a separate reserve component of the U.S. Air Force. There are more than 140 Air Guard units throughout the U.S. and its territories. While missions vary from unit to unit, some interesting ones include pararescue missions, modular airborne firefighting support, combat communications and air traffic control.
