Vessels Coal Gas, Inc, is a Denver based company developing and operating coal mine methane producing properties in the Rocky Mountain and Appalachian coal basins. Vessels specializes in reducing methane emissions from active and inactive or abandoned coal mines. The reduction in methane emissions is achieved by treating the coal mine gas to produce a commerical natural gas product or to generate electricity and if that is not feasible then conversion of the methane into carbon dioxide ( CO2 ). Methane is the primary constituent of natural gas. Methane is also a green house gas as well as the cleanest burning fossil fuel. Vessels earns revenue from the sale of the energy and the environmental attributes associated with the destruction of the methane as a green house gas. The management and personnel of Vessels have extensive careers in mining, natural gas processing, power generation, and natural gas operations and sales. The experience the Vessels team has had with natural gas is directly applicable to capturing methane emissions from coal mines. Vessels currently operates a coal mine methane recovery property in Cambria County, Pennsylvania that came on production in May of 2008. Since start of operations, the plant has sold over 330, 000 mcf of commercial quality natural gas product into Peoples Natural Gas, a Pittsburgh based natural gas utility, and produced over 120, 000 Verified Carbon Units ( VCUs ) of Carbon Emission Reductions ( CERs ). Vessels is currently installing an electrical generation unit on the plant site to increase the volume of CERs. The electrical generation is expected to be operational in November 2010. Vessels is currently developing a similar project in Colorado on the Sanborn Creek Mine in Gunnison County, Colorado. The Sanborn Creek property will initially utilize the coal mine methane as a fuel for electrical generation.
