Established in 1996, Summit Middle School is a Blue Ribbon school that serves more than 300 students in grades six through eight. The school offers special courses in drawing, cartooning, sculpture, painting, technology study, creative writing and Web publishing. Its academic curriculum also includes foreign language, English, science, music, art, physical education, reading, writing, social studies and math. Summit Middle School offers various college preparatory high school programs. The school encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities, including student council and chess club. It houses a library that features a collection of books, periodicals and reference materials. The school organizes various sports activities, such as track and field, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, cross-country and football. Located in Boulder, Colo., Summit Middle School is a part of the Boulder Valley School District, which operates several educational institutions.
