History
The Lakewood Community Congregational Church was founded by Pastor Martin Murray, Jr., and 35 charter members on June 14, 1953. The first worship services were held in the basement of the Murray home at 120 Carr Street. By the end of the year, our original membership had doubled, and we had formed a Sunday School, Pilgrim Fellowship, and Junior and Senior Choirs. Through the ensuing years, our numbers kept growing. We purchased land next door, and built a new church at 100 Carr Street, with remodeling done in 1966 and 2003. In 1960, we became part of the United Church of Christ, with a name change in 1965 to Lakewood United Church. In 1996, the name legally became Lakewood United Church of Christ. We declared ourselves an Open and Affirming congregation on June 4, 2001. Our involvement with the community and our church activities have continued to grow, creating the enthusiastic and exciting church that we have today.
