The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad was founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1879, and the historic train has been in continuous operation since, carrying passengers in vintage steam locomotives and rolling stocks. It offers a variety of transportation and seating options, such as vintage coaches, open-air gondolas, first-class parlors cars, and silver vista and presidential-class cinco animas. It travels along the Animas River from Durango to Silverton in Colorado. It offers a variety of passenger cars, including Home Ranch, Shenandoah, Pinkerton, King Mine, McPhee, Silverton, Needleton, Animas City, Durango, Cascade, Trimble, La Plata, Tacoma, Hermosa, Elk Park, Rockwood, San Juan, Hunt, North Star, Silver Vista, Alamosa, Cinco Animas, Nomad, General Palmer and Rail Camp. It additionally organizes various events, such as fall photographer's special, murder mystery train, the great pumpkin patch express, cascade canyon winter train, the polar express, Santa reception in the depot and the annual New Year's Eve special train.
