From its headquarters located on the western edge of the Yolo Bypass, a flood control channel connected to the Sacramento River, Yolo Basin Foundation promotes wildlife education about this unique seasonal habitat. When the river runs at flood stage during wet winters, the Bypass resembles an inland sea. The river water provides a much-needed habitat for many species, from salmon to billions of nutritious insects. In addition, the Bypass comprises a major branch of the Pacific Flyway, along which thousands of migratory birds travel. Volunteer docents guide excursions into the Bypass during dry months and direct restoration efforts.
