History
After graduating from UCSB with a graduate degree in Marine Biology (specializing in population dynamics of the giant kelp), Capt. Gabe realized that Santa Barbara is a very special place, and wanted to share his passion for the ocean and sailing with his friends and family. It quickly became apparent that this would be a full time job, and so he chose to follow his passion and take the plunge into the business world rather than take a traditional scientific career. Western Gull Charters sets itself apart by offering tours led by experienced marine biologists. Our mission is to connect people with their ocean resources and inspire a balanced perspective on conservation and resources use. We want to make your trip unforgettable, so cruises are customized for your complete enjoyment!
Specialties
We specialize in educational and interpretive Coastal Sailing Tours and Island Excursions, departing from Santa Barbara, California. Captain Gabe Rodriguez and 1st Mate Angelica Zavala are marine biologists who specialize in seaweeds and marine infectious disease, respectively. Join us as we explore the beautifully wild coast along Santa Barbara. Sail aboard a Catalina 34' yacht to the nearby Channel Islands of San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, and Anacapa. See Painted Cave (one of the largest sea caves in the world), hike the islands for a glimpse of the iconic Island Fox, snorkel or dive the pristine reefs of a Marine Reserve, fish for calico, lingcod, halibut, rockfish and more... or just relax and take in the serene beauty that will surround you. Trips are private (you get the whole boat to yourself!) when you reserve in advance, 6-passenger maximum. Cruises can be as short as a 1.5 hour sunset, seal-watching, wine-sipping tour, or can be a full weekend exploring the islands. All trips are totally customized based on your interests and the prevailing weather for your complete enjoyment!
