The United States Secret Service is a federal law enforcement agency. Based in Sacramento, Calif., it operates more than 150 offices throughout the United States and abroad. Established in 1865, primarily to suppress the counterfeiting of U.S. currency, the agency is now mandated by Congress to carry out dual missions: protection of national and visiting foreign leaders, and criminal investigations. Its investigation areas include counterfeiting of U.S. currency /foreign currency, identity crimes such as access device fraud, identity theft, false identification fraud, bank fraud and check fraud; telemarketing fraud; telecommunications fraud; computer fraud; fraud targeting automated payment systems and teller machines and direct deposit fraud, to name a few.
