The site for Alameda football for more than a century, Thompson Field is a local landmark. The field itself has a "decidedly hometown feel," layered with thin grass and flanked by two metal bleachers. During the Alameda high school and youth football seasons, there is a snack bar with food and beverages served with a smile. In September 2005, the Oakland Tribune ranked Thompson Field amongst the top six venues to watch a high school football game in the East Bay. An aging gem of Alameda athletic history, football fans recently raised the funds to refurbish the stadium's scoreboard in honor of legendary Alameda High coach Forrest Klein.
