The Domes, also known as Baggins End Innovative Housing, is a unique cooperative housing community located in Davis, CA. Established in 1972, it consists of 14 polyurethane-insulated fiberglass domes that provide affordable, low-income housing for 26 UC Davis students. The Domes promotes critical thought, communication, and cooperation, while resisting consumerism and structures of oppression.
Designed by Ron Swenson, the Domes is one of the few student co-housing cooperative communities in the USA and is considered an early example of the Tiny House Small House Movement. Constructed by student volunteers, the community encourages unlearning oppressive behaviors, self-education, and sharing of resources. With a focus on inclusivity and solidarity, the Domes offers a safer and compassionate space for students to live, learn, and grow.
