For 20 years the Sonoma Ecology Center (SEC) has been engaging in activities realize its mission of "working with [the] community to enhance and sustain ecological health in Sonoma Valley." The ecologically unifying characteristic about the Sonoma Valley is that it is a watershed, or a ridge-line, encircled basin with creeks and streams all replenished by rainfall within that area--and all being fed by or feeding each other. The SEC focuses a lot of its research, mapping, restoration and education on the Sonoma Valley watershed and water table. A big part of the group's work involves the community. Educational outings and lectures are listed on the website, along with information about K-12 Watershed Education and the Enviro-Leaders program for youth ages 14-18. The Sonoma Garden Park is run by the SEC and offers a garden camp, volunteer days, community garden plots, a harvest market, a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, gardening workshops, and occasional celebrations. The SEC office is located in the downtown Sonoma State Historic Park and is not staffed at regular hours. The best way to get involved is to check the website or visit the Sonoma Garden Park during volunteer days: Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The Garden is on 7th street, just past MacArthur.
