California, the golden state, is located on the west coast of North America. With a population of approximately 35 million and an economy in excess of one trillion dollars, the state is known for its growth, development, technology and diversity. In fact, about one-fourth of Californians were born outside of the United States. California s government is divided into separate legislative, executive and judicial branches. Supreme executive power resides with the governor; judicial power with California s supreme, superior, appellate, municipal and justice courts; and legislative power with those senators and representatives elected by the state to represent California in the U.S. congress. The state is home to numerous metropolitan cities, including Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco. California offers visitors numerous activities and attractions, including several wild life and theme parks, state and national parks, historic sites, museums, shopping opportunities and special events. California was admitted into the Unites States in 1850 as the 31st state.
