History
Social Model Recovery Systems was established in answer to the difficulties faced by individuals with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders seeking recovery from both ailments. Prior to us opening the doors to River Community in 1987, individuals seeking recovery from these Co-Occurring Disorders (COD) bounced between service silos treating each disorder in separate vacuums, with a few professionals in the fields of mental health and substance abuse treatment realizing they were failing to address the exacerbating influences each disorder had on the other. River Community was the first long-term, residential treatment program in the country treating both disorders simultaneously. Since then SMRS has experienced a robust system of care, which includes 8 residential substance abuse treatment programs all with specialized attention to individuals with co-occurring mental illness; 4 outpatient substance abuse treatment and co-occurring disorder programs, and more.
