History
A small, family-owned and -operated business since 1912, Slater's originated in Fresno, California. It was founded by Louis Slater, who came to America in 1905. After World War II ended, one of his sons, Matt Slater, returned to the state and opened a Merced location in 1946. During the war effort, people had gone without such commodities as nylons, refrigerators, tires and other goods for years. As soon as consumer manufacturing returned, people were more than ready to buy. Shortly after the Merced store opened, Matt Slater would arrive at work in the mornings to find a Slater's delivery truck, loaded with merchandise, waiting behind the store. People were lined up at the front door wanting to know what had come in, so they could purchase it. Business was fabulous. In 1953, Slater's 15,000-square-foot, premier-quality Modesto showroom opened at 16th and J streets. Today, our longstanding tradition of excellence continues, as clients from near and far enjoy our first-class merchandise,
