History
The Morgan Hill Library was established as a branch of the Santa Clara County Library on July 25, 1914 . Mrs. John R. Goold was appointed Morgan Hill Library Custodian & the Library opened on August 12 in Goold's Department Store. The library consisted of just a few cases of books hidden behind a curtain. In 1930 the library was in the rear of the Miller building fronting on Encino Avenue & had about 2,000 volumes. Each family could borrow one book a week. In the 1940's, the Library moved to the backyard cottage of Librarian, Edith Reed, on 6th Street. From 1948-1960, the Library operated from the annex of the old Friendly Inn with Mrs. Walter Graeb as librarian. From 1960-1973 , the Library was located at the Nob Hill Shopping Center. It was 4,000 square feet. In August 1973, the Library moved to the Civic Center expanding to 13,900 square feet and had 48,502 volumes. On July 21, 2007, the City of Morgan Hill had 38,000 residents & opened its new 28,000 square foot library.
