The San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center, built to honor the men and women who served during the First World War, is the center of cultural activity and covers seven and one-half acres in the historic Civic Center district. It organizes and holds operas, symphonies, modern and classical dances, theatres, recitals, plays, lectures, meetings, receptions, special screenings and gala events. The center provides technical and general support to assist producers in the presentation of their events. The City and County of San Francisco is responsible for the administration, operation and maintenance of the War Memorial buildings and grounds. The facilities include Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall, War Memorial Opera House and War Memorial Veterans Building, among others.
