History
Sansum Clinic began in the early 1920s and has played a major role in the healthcare of the Santa Barbara community for over 90 years. Sansum Clinic exists today as a not-for-profit foundation under local ownership and administered by a local Board of Trustees for the benefit of the community and the region as a whole. Dr. William David Sansum, one of Sansum Clinic's founders, was a pioneering researcher who launched the Clinic with the intent to study and eventually conquer diabetes. He was the first American to successfully isolate, produce and administer insulin to treat diabetes. The Clinic today is a result of visionary foresight by the governing physicians whose intent was to create a resource with a permanent presence in the community, just like Dr. Sansum. That spirit of innovation is a legacy carried forward to this day.
