Established in 1997, Prospect Sierra is a private K-8 school with two campuses in El Cerrito. The Avis campus includes grades 5-8 at 960 Avis Drive. The Tapscott campus serves grades K-4 at 2060 Tapscott Avenue. Offering an academically and culturally rich program, the school says its mission is "to cultivate students who are passionate about learning" and that it "cultivates compassion, fairness, respect and individuality within a community that celebrates diversity, authenticity and service." Prospect Sierra Middle School students made the local TV news in June 2010 when their "Carrotmob" elective selected an Emeryville pizza parlor as winner in a green-business contest and helped inspire a push for compost containers for customers in the EmeryBay Food Court.
