Part of the Los Alamitos Unified School District, Oak Middle School has been repeatedly named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence and a California Distinguished School. Under Principal Sally Neiser, the school serves more than 1,000 sixth, seventh and eighth graders. The lion is the Oak Middle School mascot, and a pride of lions is featured in a mural anchoring the school's outdoor auditorium. The school has a very low rate of disciplinary issues such as expulsions or suspensions and scores high on standardized testing. A majority of the students at Oak Middle School exceed the state's average proficiency levels in all categories - English, math, science and history. Programs at the school include choir and science Olympiad. Oak students have their choice of more than a dozen clubs offered at the school, including a paintball club, a dance club and a Christian club.
