Street maintenance, facilities upkeep and road median beautification are among the responsibilities of the city's public works crew. Department head Jason Nutt oversees the engineering and maintenance divisions, which combine efforts to make sure Novato's infrastructure remains sound. Engineers oversee traffic flow, design of public facilities and construction management. Geographical management systems are widely used in each department, including digital maps. Several committees that include resident volunteers, such as the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and the Safe Routes to School Committee, help guide the department's work flow. The maintenance division handles long-term care of roads, storm drains, pumping stations, parks and other city infrastructure. It is involved in disaster response, winter storm preparation, graffiti abatement, street sweeping and hazardous materials disposal. Public Works operates closely with the Novato Sanitary District and the North Marin Water District, which are not part of the city government.
