The Southern Marin Fire Protection District is an independent special district established in July of 1999 to provide fire, rescue and paramedic services to the communities of Tamalpais Valley, Almonte, Homestead Valley, Alto, Strawberry, approximately 1/3 of the town of Tiburon, and the city of Sausalito. The district, which has 52 full-time employees, covers 11.5 square miles, approximately 27,700 people and more than 14,100 homes and commercial structures. It operates three stations, and responds to more than 4,000 incidents per year. The district also provides paramedic service to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Muir Beach and the Muir Woods National Monument. A seven-member board of directors governs the district and meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month.
