A so-called "pocket park," first opened in April of 2008, Sierra Madre's Milton & Harriet Goldberg Recreation Area is a small community recreation area complete with picnic areas, stone benches, and state native plants, a sand play area, desert willow hut structure, and dry stream bed.
The city purchased the two vacant lots from the Goldbergs, who had watched children play in the area for decades and had refused many offers to sell out to would-be developers.
Teaming to build Sierra Madre's first new public park in more than 30 years, around 100 community volunteers planted 200 trees and constructed stone water collecting basins to attract wildlife.
