Medi-Cal is a unit of the San Luis Obispo County Department of Social Services in California. It is the state version of the Federal Medi-Caid program and pays for health care for certain eligible residents of the county. Medi-Cal is funded by state and federal taxes. It provides special programs for pregnant women who cannot afford to pay for medical expenses. In certain cases, Medi-Cal is also available at no cost to the mother even if she has an income. Medical services included under its special program are those that relate to family planning, pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse, venereal disease and other sexually transmitted diseases, sexual assault and outpatient mental health that includes child and sexual abuse. Medi-Cal also provides confidential medical services to persons under age 21, unmarried and those living with their parents.
