Martinez Adult Education has a long history in the city. Originating in 1919 as a way for the Shell Refinery workers to receive supplemental education at night, the program became so popular that it expanded its scope and subjects. Now it offers a wide variety of subjects, including career training in law enforcement and health care, as well as parent education, home economics, GED programs, and English as a second language classes.
