The Madera County Sheriff's Department, formed in 1893, is a full-service law enforcement agency that is responsible for providing public protection and investigating crimes that occur within the unincorporated areas of Madera County, Calif. It maintains a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team that specializes in bomb disposal and hostage and barricaded gunman situations. The Madera County Sheriff's Department offers several support services, including gun registration, animal control, child fingerprinting, concealed weapon permits, and traffic and parking law enforcement. The department maintains an agricultural crimes unit that investigates vandalism cases, as well as machine, metal, fuel and chemical thefts. Headquartered in Madera, Calif., the Madera County Sheriff's Department maintains a station in Bass Lake, Calif.
