The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, also known as MTA, is a transit planner, coordinator, designer, builder and operator. It serves more than 9 million people on an over 1,400-square-mile service area. The authority operates a fleet of nearly 2,000 buses and approximately 70 miles of metro rail line. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority funds more than 15 municipal bus operators and a range of transportation projects, including bikeways, pedestrian facilities, local roads, highway improvements and call boxes. The authority employs over 9,200 mechanics, construction engineers and safety inspectors. It is governed by Los Angeles County in California.
