Long Beach Department of Health and Human Service aims to improve the quality of life for Long Beach residents through public health education and services. It is one of three city-operated local health jurisdictions in the state. It is represented by five departments: Community Health, Environmental Health, Preventative Health, Housing Authority and Support Services. It helms public health education, family and youth services. Environmental Health administrates toxic substance, disease, environmental hazards and unsanitary condition prevention through coordination with other bureaus and enforcement of environmental laws. The Housing Authority offers rental assistance programs and housing opportunities for the elderly, disabled and low-income families and residents. It provides prevention, protection, education and clinical services for tuberculosis, STDs and HIV/AIDS, as well as offering family planning and immunization services.
