Leonard R. Sanders, MD, is an endocrinologist with special interest in diabetes care, serving on the board of directors of the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators. Dr. Sanders has more than 45 years of experience in direct patient care, administration, teaching, and research. He is board certified in internal medicine, endocrinology and metabolism, and nephrology and certified in hypertension, diabetes education, advanced diabetes management, and clinical lipidology. He received a degree in biological sciences at the University of California, Davis and a medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, a fellowship in endocrinology at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center, and a fellowship in nephrology at Brook Army Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Dr. Sanders retired from the Army as a colonel and spent 8 years at Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque and 9 years caring for the Pima Indians at Gila River Health Care near Phoenix, Arizona.
