Started in 1961, Kern County Water Agency serves as the local contracting entity for the State Water Project. Based in Bakersfield, Calif., the agency participates in a wide range of water preserving and enhancing activities in Kern County. It provides a supplemental water supply for portions of the Metropolitan Bakersfield area. Some of its functional areas include State Water Project, Improvement District No. 4, Cross Valley Canal, groundwater banking, flood control and outreach activities. Kern County Water Agency is made up of 13 member units, including the Belridge Water Storage District, Berrenda Mesa Water District, Buena Vista Water Storage District and Cawelo Water District among others. The agency also educates local students about Kern County s water supplies and the importance of water conservation.
