About Gavel to Gavel Alaska We are a cable television service of KTOO-TV, Juneau's public TV station, and provide unedited live and tape-delayed coverage of state government activities. Our normal broadcast hours are from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Friday during the legislative session. As the need arises, we extend our hours to cover weekend or late-night meetings and floor sessions. Our legislative coverage includes committee meetings, floor sessions, press conferences and other legislative events. In addition, we cover oral arguments before the Alaska Supreme Court, administration press conferences and briefings, general government activities, and other meetings about legislative issues or of political interest. KTOO's Gavel to Gavel Alaska began as a two-week demonstration project during the First Session of the Nineteenth Alaska Legislature in 1995. The next year, the legislature allowed full-time coverage and honored Gavel to Gavel Alaska with a Legislative Citation. We began full-time coverage our tenth Regular Legislative Session in January 2005, and the Governor marked our tenth anniversary with an Executive Proclamation. KTOO pioneered legislative coverage in Alaska in the late 70's with weekly and daily "wrap-up" programs. KTOO also provides news feeds and related broadcast services to the major news organizations on the East Coast and to other Alaska stations. Gavel to Gavel Alaska is distributed statewide by satellite. We have the potential to reach over 90% of the state's population through cable TV. Surveys show that at least one-third of the state's population has watched (nearly half of the state's rural residents have watched) our service.
