Joe Scalise Jr. & Sons Butcher Shop has been an Alameda institution since 1935. In the late 1980s the meat seller moved to its present location inside Encinal Market. It sells all cuts of meat, poultry and pork, including free-range Petaluma chickens and grass-fed beef. Most of the sausages (hot and mild Italian, roma, basil turkey) are prepared in-house and the butchers grind all the beef on-site too. Several premade entrees--stuffed chicken breasts, pork chops and beef, rosemary chicken breasts, marinated kebabs, and homemade meatballs--line the cases for customers to bake at home. The deli counter is fully stocked, and roast beef and turkey are both made on-site. Willy Bird turkeys are available year-round and can be ordered in advance for holidays. Customers can drop off knives for sharpening; just ask when the knife man will be in the neighborhood. And, the kind butchers love to give out free cookies, a favorite treat of all the neighborhood kids.
