History
In 2005, the California Energy Commission adopted new regulations that included existing alterations, in other words, existing homes. When a homeowner replaces a piece of their heating or cooling equipment, certain tests are required to confirm the energy efficiency of the contractor's installation. Being a homeowner myself and seeing the value of making sure a contractor installs equipment that not only works well, but saves me energy caught my interest. I had been working for an installing contractor and saw the value firsthand what a difference this new code would make in saving me and others like me money, energy and improve my comfort. The testing was simple and direct. Verify the contractor sealed the ductwork so my heat or air did not leak into my crawlspace or attic. Verify the air conditioner had the right amount of Freon in it--not too much or too little. This business opportunity made sense, be a homeowner advocate.
