If this is an emergency, call 911.
The Hermosa Beach Fire Department (HBFD) consists of one station with 18 personnel, one assistant fire chief and one fire chief. The department also hires ambulance operators/interns for future firefighters. The department's history traces back to 1907, when Hermosa Beach incorporated. In addition, a past HBFD fire chief has been credited with starting a national trend of buying new white-painted fire engines instead of the traditional red.
Three platoons rotate a 48-hour schedule. The department has three fire engines and two ambulances. Two of engines are front line, with one for reserve.
Currently, 16 out of 18 fire personnel have paramedic status. Hermosa Beach has provided paramedic services within the fire department since 1977. There is a minimum of four paramedics per shift. Approximately 80 percent of the calls received by the department involve emergency medical services.
